When most people imagine the perfect beach town, they imagine small homes, quaint boutiques, and a laid back atmosphere. Flagler Beach, located along the north part of Florida's Atlantic Coast, perfectly embodies the ideal beach community. If you're looking for a seaside community in which to buy a retirement home and spend your days in total relaxation, be sure to take a long look at Flagler Beach.

History
The Timucuan people came to the northern Florida Coast roughly 12,000 years ago. The Spanish explored the area in 1567, and the French established an outpost near modern-day Jacksonville. Permanent, non-native settlers didn't come to Flagler Beach until the early 1800s. The city was formally incorporated in 1925, but remained a quiet fishing village for much of its history. It's only recently that Flagler Beach has seen significant development.

Location
Flagler Beach lies along the north part of Florida's east coast, about 100 miles south of the Georgia-Florida border. Palm Coast is located just north of Flagler Beach, and Ormond Beach is the next community to the south. Jacksonville is roughly an hour's drive north, and Daytona Beach is 30 minutes south. Ocala National Forest, which has numerous hiking trails, is due west of Flagler Beach.

Real Estate
Though Flagler Beach was seen impressive growth in recent years, there are still many excellent properties available. Whether you're looking to downsize with a condo or townhome or splurge on a luxurious single-family home, you're bound to find your ideal living space in Flagler Beach. Single-family homes start at $300,000, and condos start at $125,000.  You'll fall in love with this oceanside community no matter which part of town you move to.

Life in Flagler Beach
Though Flagler Beach still has a modest population of just a few thousand, there's plenty to do. Snowbirds and retirees love visiting the farmer's market, browsing charming boutiques, and sampling delicious cuisine. If you're tired of big-city beaches, you'll love Flagler Beach's quiet and secluded seaside spots. The community also has an exciting nightlife, with live music every weekend during the popular season.

The Flagler Beach Fishing Pier is one of the best known attractions in the region. From the pier, you can see far up and down the coast and fish to your heart's content. If you're interested in local history, be sure to check out the Flagler Beach Historical Museum. For world-class golfing, visit one - or all - of the area's award-winning golf courses.
